What is Graphic Design Now ?

What is Graphic Deign Now ?

In groups we had to show each other our ten chosen images that illustrated which fields of Graphic Design we where inspired by. We had to note down reasons why they had chosen their examples, and If we where presenting we had to tell the group why we had picked those ten.
From the lists we had to create a definitive list of the main reasons why group members had chosen their examples and what about them interested them. From these lists, as the whole year group we came up with a list of criteria/categories which would help us to define why we liked a piece of work, these were;
  • Creative Use of Type
  • Visual Quality
  • Tone of Voice
  • Language
  • Interactive/ Audience Engagement
  • Detail
  • Simplicity/ Minimal
  • Meanings/ Messages
  • Visual Content
  • Style/ Aesthetic
  • Media and Production
  • Format/ Form
  • Personal Interest
  • Structure and Layout
From this list we had to choose five of the criteria and then research into further examples of the chosen criteria.

Creative use of Type

In this image the type is conflicting with the meaning of the quote, yet as it has a faded effect you can intstantly see that the quote is about fading. Also the designer had used paint to create this type and this is an alternative solution to computer generated or hand drawn.

This font has been created out of what looks like bendy straws which are colorful and vibrant they promote the sense of happiness, liveliness and a party which is what New Year is supposed to be about.

There are two different typefaces in this piece of work, one is very illustrative and hand generated it almost looks like a part of the imagery in the background. Whereas the other typeface is a complete contrast to the previous type , it is computer-generated and a very subtle color. However this typeface has very straight lines whereas the brighter is very curvy, but the contrast works well in this piece.

This typeface is very detailed and crafted, I like the way the O has been placed central in the whole piece and there are three letters either side which gives it a symmetrical feel. The type has successfully gone from black to color and I think that the colors are supposed to representative of Madonna and her era.

This work is quite different to the others above as it is mainly numerical, but the small type around the numbers create their outline and I think that this is a clever use as it draws you in more to the page. The designer has played with negative space and how may sentences they need to make it clear what the numbers are.

In this piece the type has been created with paper and it has been edited on photoshop to add the hand/lighter and paper effect in the background. And so there is a strong concept too in this piece mainly created by the effect of the type.
Detail

http-_raw.abduzeedo.com_post_32668313304
This piece of digital illustration, to me seems highly detailed and highly complex. The designer has really used light and shading to create a realistic, mature looking illustration.

This work seems very ornate and intricate. The typography also reflects this and it seems like a more formal piece of design yet it is still interesting as the designer has considered lots of details i.e the deboss on the top left hand corner of the letter publication.

Olga Mosina- behance.net
This packaging is very illustrative and detailled in this sense, it is also detailled as they have considered the finishing , there is embossing and and a sparkled effect. And so it is alltogether a very detailled intricate piece.

Walter Hansen- behance.net
This work is even more detailled than the last in my onion, however it is more vector based. The type has been created by the designer and they have considered shading and lines to create more detial. The lines in this piece are what makes it so intricate. Aswell as this the gold has been used tonally.

This piece is again highly illustrative, its clearly hand drawn and the little drawings all connect which to me makes it very complew and therefore the designer has spent there time and it is almost crafted.

Si Scott
This work is from Si Scot known for his higly intricate and detailled work and here is an example of that work. It is vector based and created entirely by the designer. He uses thick and thin lines, and fills some of the shapes , he really plays with the shape of the lines and everything is curved.

Meanings/ Messages

The concept of this piece is you can fit alot into a little, and this is very clear from this designas the album artwork explodes out of the ipod gaing size to show the amount you can fit into one ipod. It is also very eyecatching as the artwork is 3D and comes off the billboard, it appears lively and fun too.
http-_www.behance.net_gallery_Lace-up-save-lives_3802181
This charity campaign involved footballers, and it was against AIDs, the colour associated with AIDs campaigns is red and so this charity has made clever used of this and used as it only colur ( along with white ). As well as this buying the laces for football boots gived the charity money. And so the laces are endorsed by famous footballers and athletes to raise awareness and credibility.

A piece by amnesty international, it has an infographic style and the illustration is very simple but communicates to a wide audience. The fact that the illustration is holding up a flame gives connotations of hope, peace and freedom something the organisation supports.

This poster is raising awareness of the tiger being an almost extinct species, its in conjuction with the chineese year of the tiger. And so the poster is saying they could both be last as the tiger is almost extinct, even though i feel the main copy below the tiger illustration isn't needed or could of been better. Also the heavy type matches the thick strokes of the illustration.

This poster is a juxtaposition. Its about the environment and the illustration ( photoshop ) is the of the factories which is the bad and the actual material, a leaf is the good and so its demonstrating the bad is going into the good.

Media and Production

www.madebyanalogue.co.uk
An example of packeging here, they have considered the shape and usage of  the box, they have also printed onto it . The card used has probably been selected specailly.

This poster seems to be like it has been screen printed , It almost looks like foil. The gold is also very sharp unlike if you where to print it digitally. I also think that the type and illustration has been digitally generated.

There has been many different applications in this work and it shows you the variety of productions for design work. It is a branding project and so many different techniques have been used.

This is an example of editorial design and in this case a double page spread in a magazine, where there is photography and digital illustrations used in an infographic style.

This is another example of packaging but this time the graphics are hand rendered. The design has also been printed on the lid and this will of had to have gone through a special process.
Simplicity/Minimal

Thees icons have been created for a smart phone they are very simplistic and monotone, they also communicate effectively what they are symbolising and therefore they are a good piece of visual communication.
This is a logo for a comapany , it has been hand dran but the message to me is growth and i get this from the word and the way the y is growing upwards as a tree, and this has been sommunicated very simplistically but it is still sophisticated.

This is an image of a bear, I think it has been created as a logo but as there is no type I am unsure of the company. But the illustrtion itself is completley linear made up of thick strokes and so it is the only component this to me makes it simplistic yet I feel it works.

This also is a logo. It is made up of a 6 and a 9 or they could be speech marks, and they will represnt the intentions of the company. Again its monotone which makes it seem minimal.

Again another monotone piece, the illustration is computer generated and it is layers of heaxagons yet it clearly communcates chemistry and science and so it too is ver effective.

In this piece it is purely typographic and the letter S has become the logo yet it all connects and works. The geometric style could also represent a part of the company.

Style/ Aesthetic
I would say this has been designed on illustarator as it is very vectorial looking. It is full colour and I would say its intricate and organic looking.

I think that this has been made on photoshop using a mixture of photography and digitally generated illustrations/type. I wouls say that it looks sophisticated and complex and therefore its quite mature in its style.

On this packaging the the illustrations have been hand drawn and they are meant to look quite childish and playful. This is probably to appeal to a younger audience too.

Wheareas this illustation is also hand drawn yet the drawing is more detailled, the strokes are finer and there are alot more, aswell as this there is alot going on and it isn't full colour.
This image has been composed on photshop the photograph as the background has obviously been torn and then it has been scanned in. The shape/type over the top has been created digitally. This image to me seems very sophisticatd and looks to be inspired by fashion.

This image is a digital collage , it is made up of photographs and shapes. It is slightly whimsical and fun, yet it definatly represents ideas of space.
