Free Ad (My Finals and Others)
Adverts I created for Will, Jane and Myself
For Janes ad, I tried to portray a sense of hands on design and a practical practice. I also wanted to convey a sense of product and packaging. I kept the font sans-serif as I wanted it to look the least influenced by any country as possible as Jane would like to work internationally. I also wanted to keep it simple and too the point as this is what Jane said she likes to be and she does in her design work too.
I went for an actual editorial layout for my own ad, I also picked the font Bodoni, as I feel its is very fashionable/ modern and fashion editorial, like Vogue and Elle. I stuck with black and white.
Things I would change after seeing what others have created for me...
- I would probably change the layout.
- Make my name into more of a logo/brand
- Include an fashion like photograph
- Perhaps introduce a colour.
- Use opacities
Adverts created for me by Jane and Will
Things that I would consider correct about myself as a designer about this poster ...
- Typographic, editorial style font.
- Simple colour scheme
- Structured, and use of geometric shapes
Things I would consider changeable...
- The colour pink
- The layout
- Perhaps inclusion of a photographic image
- And my contact details
Things that I would consider correct about myself as a designer about this poster ...
- Type and image has been used
- I like the photograph, its girly and editorial
- I really like the black and white colour schemes, the use of opacities ext
- The details of interest are correct as are the contact details
Things I would consider changeable...
- The choice of font, is too digital almost computer-game like
- Perhaps the layout
- And maybe the use of the white borders
- Also the font used for my name, is a bit script like for me
A separate group of people then had to look at the three ads and describe what they thought the person was about as a designer...
- editorial style
- modernist
- classic
- contemporary
- stylish
I think that all of these are things I would like to communicate about my own work and practice. I would say that I do sway towards a more Modern style.
Things the ads didn't have in common
- use of colour
- use of photography
- layout
- shape/format
I think personally I need to address layouts that I like , and I should of had photographic imagery in my own free ad. I also think that the me and will had a similar colour scheme.

What furnishing do you really need?
I've lived in London for 6 months now, and it wasn't nearly as expensive as I thought it would be.
Depending on where you live, rent will usually run £240-£500/month. I've never seen a room for more than £280/week. But then again, I look at places that are aimed at people like me (the unposh). £280/week is the most I would ever pay for a room, because there are really nice rooms that go for well below that. Anything lower than £60 is either in a really far away place, council housing (poor housing), or both, so I would stay away from those. I'm not that kind of unposh.
Food (if you shop at Tesco, Sainsbury's, Lidl, Asda) will probably range from £50-£100/month depending on how much you eat.
Clothes are cheapest at Primark and H&M, and it's pretty good quality. A dress shirt will run about £4-£15, and pants, coats, accessories won't hurt your pocket too much.
Taxes suck if you're working. But, if you're a student you're exempt from paying taxes. They're not totally unreasonable, but depending on how much you make, it takes at least a couple of hundred pounds out of your gross pay.
There's a thing called VAT (I forgot what it stands for) that's basically a consumer tax on goods. However, if you keep all your receipts, when you leave the country (at the airport) there's a VAT refund center where you can get all your VAT tax back.
JD Wetherspoons is a chain in the UK. You can get a beer and a burger (with chips) for under £5. JD's are almost everywhere, and go by different names (Moon Under Water, The Misty Moon, Wetherpoons, etc.)
Honestly, it's really not that expensive unless you blow your money on whatever floats your way. And unless you're super posh, you probably wouldn't be spending your money on overly lavish things.
So, in USD terms, and in the highest terms:
Rent: $1000/month
Food: $200/month
Clothes: (you would probably bring most with you, but let's say you spend $200 on clothes...though I don't know who does that in a month)
Beer/Alcohol: Probably around $200/month
Taxes: $50
Total USD: $1650
Total GBP: £825

If you have a job that pays less than this, then go with the low end of the scale and you get a monthly cost of about £400-£600.
The biggest thing will be rent, which is less expensive the more you leave the city center. Zone 1 and 2 are more expensive than Zone 3 and 4, and so on. Zone 1 is the toughest to get a room in.
Also, I forgot to factor in transportation. The tube, for a monthly pass, is £90. The buses are least expensive (about a pound per ride).
I would check out gumtree.com for rooms.

Zone 3+
Flat Sharing
http://www.welfare.qmul.ac.uk/international/money/costofliving/
And so I worked out costs on an average basis,
for instance for rent I looked at the costs of 5 flat shares and then got the average total from that. It equalled around £580 per month this included utility bills(including internet) and council tax.
I worked food and amenities to be around £50 a week totalling £200 a month, this includes a lot of lunches from home not shop bought.
And the cost of travel only including Zones 1-3 (as I felt that these where the zones that the company would need to travel around the most) is around £141.40, this is in the form of an oyster card. But it might be more appropriate to walk most days depending how far away from the office you are. (the office selected is in Zone 3)
An average phone contract is around £40 a week.
I also budgeted for clothing around £50 a week but this is quite large sum and it could be possible to save money from this.
And I allowed £50 a week for entertainment and going out etc, again this may rollover, one week might be more expensive than another.
One off payments of a tv license equals £145.50
And so the annual cost totalled around £14,457.00
so Per Month its equals £1,205
Per Week = £302
This budget isn't a tight budget as I felt that many of us wouldn't be able to stick to a tight budget and we wouldn't want to be solely working.
From this amount we can add it to the total to find out how much we would need to charge clients for work.

SocioDesign
http://sociodesign.co.uk
I like all the work produced by this studio, they are very considerate of the stock they use and print finishes, but they also have a simple structured aesthetic and focus on branding too.
Even though I am not really interested in product and packaging I do like this project work, I also like the branding, the design is simple and I like the stock considerations, clean and modern.

Final Critique (Individual Practice)
For this critique I had my final Individual Practice boards for my main brief, The Body Shop, I also had final boards for Cath Kidston, Classic and Iconic Cars, Tigerprint, and the two logo briefs I had done.
Presentation
Boards are well laid out, interesting portrait orientation for the Body Shop brief boards.
Type is to the point not too much detail.
There needs to be mockups on every board as currently there aren't many.
Project Management
A lot of briefs answered and boards completed.
Could of tried some different types of briefs
How you answered the brief
Stuck to the briefs specifications and answered them appropriately
Could of tried to go off the brief specifications and challenged the ideas of the brief
All the feedback I received was the same as the points above, just worded differently.
From this I know that I need to continue preparing boards for all my briefs and start mockups for my responses.

Final Critique (Collaborative)
For the final crit for the collaborative brief, I had created the presentation boards, we also had printed materials, I think that our presentation looked very bright and vibrant, the pink background really made the boards stand out, they looked quite girly, and this was appropriate for the brief and its target audience.
From the crit we received quite a lot of feedback in the form of post it notes.
The feedback was mainly positive and there was a few constructive criticisms that I had not considered before but I agreed with I was happy to have gained this feedback and I was glad that we had everything to show, as it meant we could receive as much feedback as possible.
Positive points
The boards are vibrant and attractive
They are appropriate to the target audience
The concept is strong
Constructive Feedback
The boards are too busy
The type is hard to read as it is too long (too many words per line)
The leaflet needs reprinting as there are spelling mistakes and they don't fold.
I will work upon this feedback for the final boards, to address these issues I will change the layout of the type. And I will also spread out the work onto more boards. I also knew that the leaflet wasn't perfect before the crit but this is obviously something others noticed too and it definitely needs reprinting.

Tiger Print Competition Brief
In the studio, Daisy mentioned this competition to somebody else, but I instantly thought of a pattern that I could do, and so I checked the brief and I think that it will work.
The Brief
http://designcompetition.tigerprint.uk.com/page/CONTESTS/contest/BlackandWhitePattern2014
As a stark contrast to last month’s colour competition, we’ve decided to run the popular Black & White pattern competition.
This month we want you to focus on black and white surface pattern. We would like you to design a surface pattern for a male or female recipient that could be used across a range of our everyday products including:
Gift bags, wrapping paper, stationery products or greeting cards.
The brief is open, so get back to basics and think about how the pattern is generated. Explore different techniques and formats, and really experiment with the elements that make up your pattern. Think about how different lines, marks and patterns can be created and applied. Look at fashion and homeware trends for inspiration.
Deliverables
We would like your design in black and white, anything with colour will not be accepted.
Your design could be a repeat pattern or a placement print. You may choose to use your favourite method of working or a combination of mediums such as:
- Hand drawn/mark making
- Digital artwork
- Collage/embellishments i.e. embroidery etc.
- Photographic elements
Be Commercial:
As always, we’d like you to keep the Marks and Spencer customer in mind. The final design must have a commercial feel that will appeal to men & women. Our everyday range is on display now, so why not pop in to your local store or go online and take a look at what we currently do.

This studio again is well branded the word is followed by another positive word. I like the studio as they seem to be quite brand orientated but they do also do publishing/ editorial work.
The work is quite simple and they use photography mainly as their imagery which is something I am interested in in my own work.
