NAME

Amy Hill

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I think that I have vastly improved on InDesign, I now have more skills on this programme. I have learnt how to use the margins and guides effectively and how to set up and layout of a page. And I now know how to keep everything together and package a page or spread ready to print. I have also developed more type skills, as I have looked at and used type in all my projects, I would say I am more confident with my use of type. And I have also gained more skills in illustrator as I have used this software in almost every brief for this module. I would also say I have developed my skills at working in a group even though there could be some more improvement at working with others and knowing/ utilising our own strengths to create good finals.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I have learnt more about the use of stock and what effect it can have and I have also thought more about the overall production of a final piece, and I have learnt to make a mock up of a complex item such as a pack. I would also say that I have learnt more about the printing process and the time it takes to produce a final.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

My strengths that I can identify from doing this module are; the use of InDesign and in particular layout and the use of type and image on a page. Using illustrator to create vector images and type. The use of type itself and its overall appearance and effect on a page. I will use these methods throughout the course and I hope to gain more knowledge and extensive skills in these software’s. I would also say I have developed more interest towards branding and identity, and editorial work.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

A weakness of my work is the professional standard as to which I have produced my final products, I have considered the stock but I have not been too concise with the overall making process. In the future I need to plan ahead and get to workshops. I would also say that Photoshop is a bit of a weakness of mine, even though I can use it, I am not at the same standard as I am now with Illustrator and InDesign. I would also say again I have improved with my design sheets, but there is still room for a lot more improvement and I will try to do this in my next brief.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1.     I will plan further ahead and think more about the making of a product, when I make a product in order to achieve a higher standard of finish, and bring it up to a professional standard.
2.     I need to try start experimenting more with other facilities and methods of production, I have experimented with sizes and shapes but I need to try use other methods of production more often in order to create interesting designs and innovative pieces of work i.e. screen print, letterpress, foiling, laser cut e.c.t.
3.     Continue to develop my development skills, e.g. design sheets and drawing skills, this will help me to come up with a range of ideas and help me see where I could improve or if I could combine two ideas. Once its on paper you can see it.
4.     I will try to move on from the ideas/ research stage faster so that I can move onto design and production and spend more time on this and this will help me to produce finals that are more high quality.
5.     I may try- if appropriate to use Photoshop more so that I can get more experience with the software and be more confident.

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self-evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
