Self Evaluation OUGD 405 Design Process

BA (Hons.) GRAPHIC DESIGN
LEVEL
04
 Module Code
OUGD 405

 Module Title
DESIGN PROCESS

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME

Amy Hill

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I think that I have learned how to research more effectively. I have tried different methods of researching and not just relying on the internet. I would say I have begun to look into the use of info graphics and I had tried to be creative with them. I have also experienced working in a group again, and I tried to involve myself as much as I could and I would say I had an input.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I have used Photoshop and Illustrator in a lot of my work again, including the major brief. I have learnt how to search for large sized images on the internet, and I have learnt more Photoshop techniques from the Photoshop inductions. I have also learnt how to foil work, which I can now use.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I would say that in my latest work, I had researched well and in a variety of methods and I think that this made my piece well informed and I think it helped to create a good piece of work. I would also say I had researched into my other work and the most successful pieces where the ones I had researched into more extensively. I will continue to try to research more thoroughly and using different techniques, and considering quantative and qualative.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

I need to try experiment with my work more and different techniques and formats- as everything I have created this module has been A4 or smaller, paper based. I need to go further in the development stage of my work and maybe I will come up with a more creative solution.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

1.     I will experiment with a range of solutions from my initial ideas so that I will have a choice of finals, or ideas I can make into a final piece.
2.     I need to practise at getting the work on screen to look how it does when it is printed.
3.     I should try to incorporate more interesting techniques such as, foiling, embossing, screen-printing.
4.     I will try to generate more ideas quicker and of a good quality to enable me to have more time on developing the final solution.
5.     I will continue to look at the work of others when answering a brief and I will try look at the format they have presented their work.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self-evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.

What is Graphic Design For ? Study Task 4

5 Ways to Categorise Graphic Design

Information and Way Finding

Information and Way finding in graphical terms is a way of showing someone information or data. Many info-graphic pieces contain numerical data i.e. percentages, ratios and statistics. They may also contain thought or facts. Typically info graphic contains a way of visualizing this numerical data in bar charts, pie charts, and graphs e.c.t.  A lot of the time these pieces contain a lot of information on one page, it is an interesting and visual way of representing this information. Way finding is maps, directions, signs e.c.t they help you to locate where you want to be or where you are. They are often needed in everyday environments e.g. floor level, toilet signs, exit signs.

Publishing and Editorial

General publication can involve above the line and below the line publishing. Above the line involves books, magazines e.c.t that have the categories of; fiction or nonfiction under the genres, biographies, autobiographies, manuals, children’s books, education, training, reference and many more. They generally have a template and contain image and type. Below the line publication are typically designed for industry to industry and can be annual reports, catalogues, brochures, instructional, self-publication, and public sector. All of these have to consider stock, binding, media and print.

Branding and Identity

Branding and identity involves a complex task of making a clear characteristic for a business, company, charity, e.c.t it has to be recognizable and memorable. It carries a reputation with it and a feeling or attribute. This kind of design can involve the use of type and image or purely type or purely image.

Product and Packaging

Product and Packaging could be considered as one of the most interactive categories in terms of media. There is a diverse range of high end to low end packaging, expensive to cheap. There are even types of packaging that are opulent, where the packaging is better than the product itself. Packaging designers have to be aware of nets, and different packaging techniques. Items for this category could be; cards, gift tags, wrapping paper, stationary, wallpaper, the box, bottles, mugs, calendars, badges, t-shirts and many more.

Retail and Promotion
This category is for use in the retail industry, but promotion can involve anything where the place or event is being advertised. Retail can involve the design of anything in a retail environment e.g. tags, carrier bags, signage, and the environment itself. It is usually to create a mood or identity. There of course according to list are a huge variety of scales you could work at in the retail category.

Further ways to categorise each subject:

  • Genre
  • Content
  • Audiences
  • Sectors
  • Functions
  • Format

Genre-
Audience- Public/ Adults / even perhaps women
Context-
Sector- Charity
Budget- Medium/ High

Content- Type and Image
Format-  A4
Function- Informative/ Awareness
Media- Vector Shapes and typography created digitally and then printed onto white stock. Possibly mass produced.

Effectiveness- I think that the info-graphic is effective as it put numerical data into perspective. I think that the format is appropriate put if it was supposed to be a poster it would of worked better at a much larger, more attention grabbing scale i.e. A1. I think that its function is to make people aware of what is going on and it may be to get people to donate, but this isn't clear on this one piece, however if it is part of a set it'd be more clear.

Genre- Comedy/ Humorous
Audience- Designers/ Artists
Context-
Sector- Art and Design
Budget- Low

Content- Type and Image
Format-  A3
Function- Its function is to make a designer laugh or reflect upon their own practice. It isn't an instructional piece its more informative. It hasn't really got a purpose except to entertain.
Media- Illustration(hand rendered) that has then been digitally edited and printed.

Effectiveness- I think that piece is entertaining however I don't think that it has a particular purpose, and therefore it is a bit unfuctional.  I am  not sure on its format but I think it is online, it would work better as a print, where it could be seen all the time, its permanent.
