DS.Emotion Visit

I emailed DS. Emotion showing my interest in their studio, I enquired to see whether they would let me visit them and the studio.

I received a response within a week and I was excited to hear that they did want to see me and my work. I was also nervous as I hadn't been to any studios before this and I wasn't sure what it would be like.

I got to the studio early its on Brewery Wharf which is just off the centre of Leeds, it was a 10 minute walk from the train station and so it is a good location for commuting for me as the train is really easy and convenient.

When I got there I actually arrived at the back entrance, I had never been to brewery wharf before, I was let in and sat down for a bit as I was quite early, and then I met James and Dan the Senior and Creative Designers at DS.Emotion, we went through to a board room which had a long white table and chairs either side, it was a really modern and professional environment I liked the look of the studio too.

We then sat down and had a discussion, they where straight to the point and asked me what I wanted from them as I hadn't said in the email. This surprised me but I was glad that they did this, and in future emails I will be more clear as to what I am looking for. I think that it was a little nieve of me to not have asked straight away, and people are busy and want to be straight forward which is good.

I told them I was looking for a placement, they asked me for how long and I said I needed 2 weeks minimum, they said 2 weeks was a very short and they would only start at a months placement. I said that that would be great but I needed to see when or if I could fit this in and I would have to clarify with my tutors. But I knew that the Easter holidays where still to come which gave me 3 weeks already.

Anyway this was all depending on my work, I got out my work which was just in my A3 plastic carrier as I didn't have a portfolio as such, they where fine with this but advised me that other companies wouldn't like that.

My work however was in presentation form and I brought along real examples of my work for instance my newspaper tabloid for WWF, they really liked this and said that having real work was almost better and that I should always bring things like that for people to see. Which I will do.

They also gave me a few bits of advice on my presentation of my work i.e. that I should let people look at it and slow down! I was really nervous and I didn't really have an idea about pace of presenting my work.

After we finished looking at my work which was just over an hour, I left them and they said they would get back to me in the next two weeks.

I felt like it had gone well but I also felt that I had been very new to the situation and I didn't know if that would let me down. And as to whether they liked the work. I also felt that they where stern but friendly and so I had no real sense of whether I would get a placement or not, but I was happy that they had given me advice and understood I was new to meeting studios etc.

The Archipelago Studio

The Archipelago

http://www.thearchipelago.eu

The name of this studio interested me, I had no idea that they where based in Leeds. I really like their visuals and I think that they are similar to my own.

I particularly liked this work for the arts sector. A print based agency that focus on branding.

I intend to contact this studio, I think the work they produce really suits me, and I would be happy to hear from them.

B&W Studio

I came across this studio when I was researching for my dissertation. They created the report for St George's Crypt.

The work was  featured on various sites such as design week and the guardian. I think that it has a strong concept and a strong modern/ clean look which I like. As well as this it is a range of print collateral and this is also my area of concern.

As well as this its design for a social cause, and a good cause, its to promote charity and I feel strongly that this is a good thing for designers to do and aid. And I wrote about this in my dissertation and so this work attracts me to this studio.

I looked for the website and found that it was not yet live and so this limits me in seeing what kind of work they create. As well as the fact that the work I saw was created in 2010.

And so I do intend to contact them and ask for a visit.

This work for Gareth Edwards really interests me I really like the visuals and the effects of the print. I also like the client and the sector this work is for. And so this prompted me to look further...

A similar project to the one above that I also really like is this one, which is the branding and print for Pure Design Consultancy, which is an interior design company.

Their recent project also caught my eye, again I like the visual aesthetics.

Another reason why I like them is the areas of graphic design they focus on, you can see from their portfolio that they are a brand focussed and that they are a print making studio and this really appeals to me as it suits my interests and skills. I also like that they create books/ zines and this also really interests me.

As well as this as they are based in Leeds they are easy to get to and again suit me as I am from Leeds and live in Leeds.

I intend to contact them for a visit as I was advised.

The Archipelago Visit

The Archipelago was the first studio to offer to see me and my work.

I went to see Micheal the owner/ director of The Archipelago at Tower Works, Leeds.

I was really nervous to go see the studio and Micheal but when I got there he was really welcoming and made me feel a bit more at ease.

The studio is not what I expected I had no idea that a studio could be that small, there was 3 desks in there and a table for meeting the interior itself was really modern and trendy which was nice.

Micheal was the main and only designer, there was one account handler and one intern, I now think that this must be quite intense as there is a lot to think about when designing and there are less people to gain feedback from however it is obviously quite successful and the studio lends itself to the arts and culture sector which I found really suitable and I liked the work he showed me that they had done.

He also showed me a piece where they had printed white ink, which is a relatively new and expensive but I was really surprised !

He liked my work and It made me feel better in my ability in particular he liked my oneironauts exhibition work as this was the most relevant to the studio and its work. He also liked that I had visualised how it would work on signage etc, and that I should consider this in all of my projects.

I enjoyed my visit and I liked the type of work that is created there. There is not placement opportunities here at the minute as there is already an intern there until summer and I am looking for something sooner
