Final Critique- Research Publication

18/03/14

Final Crit

Inception Research Publication

To the crit I brought the whole thing, printed and ready, as they where two concertinas bigger than A3 in length I had to have them printed properly. I had also foiled my front covers and made the packaging.

Crit Feedback

I was happy with the feedback I felt that the comments where constructive and true. I also liked that people liked the design and format of my book, as this is what I had really worked on. I was annoyed that I had done certain things, i.e. having it printed onto the stock I actually wanted- which is more expensive, however this did show me how the stock looked and worked. I also found that on this stock that nail varnish scratches off onto the stock !

However I did already feel that there where a few problems with the books before going into the crit. For instance I felt that the body copy was too big and the line length was too short. I also had forgotten to delete some of the images.

I wish I hadn't of stuck the foil front covers to the books, as now I have to use a different foil, which isn't quite as good, although I had cut one size too short.
However upon reflection I could laser cut the maze and mount it onto the other paper this would have a similar effect as well as this I could use the colour of the maze as the reverse for the packaging.

I have learnt I also really need to read through what I have written, so that I know that it makes sense and that it is correct.

And that designing on screen looks different physically. E.g. point size.

Further Tutor Feedback
Typo's.

Line and word arrangement.

Drop the point size down to 9pt, and increase the leading this may look better and be readable, plus I could add more content.

Mount the packaging, as the stock is too light, ( I already felt this too but I wasn't sure how it could work)

Headings are needed like - Introduction

And the colour variations like mentioned by a peer is due to the uses of different software, e.g. photoshop and indesign
Press Quality on InDesign can reduce these problems.

And so I circled some of the problems so that I can look back at them later and I won't forget.

Colour variations- softwares

Word Arrangement

Unnecessary capital letter

Widows

Images double printed on the back.

Seam- Presentation Speech

For the presentation we decided to split up into sections to talk about the business, I was given the role of introducing who we where and where we where based. Thinking about what we had discussed, I firstly wrote down some notes on what I would say, I did this alongside looking at the presentation.

I then typed up what I had written so that I could print them out and it would be more clear and organised.

Here are my notes:
Hi, we are Seam !

A fashion orientated graphic design company
Meaning we only create design work for the fashion industry
This is our focus and purpose

We are specialists at what we do because we know our sector really well, having a refined practice means that we have more knowledge into our particular area and we know it well, this would hopefully encourage any clients we aspire to work with. As well as this we work towards high-end deliverables with sophistication and a modern edge.

So where are we based ?

We felt that London was the most appropriate location for our company
This is because it is a fashion capital
And because of this many of our clients would be based here,
we wanted to be at the epi-center,
and we wanted to be able to meet and speak to our clients face to face

We found an office on Raven Road,
this is in Woolford,
it is in Zone 4,

Which is just outside central London, zones 1 and 2
This means that are commuting times are short being only around 15 minutes to get into the city center.

Inside our studio reflects our design work, it is clean and modern, an open space allows us to feel more free and creative it also means we can talk to each other whenever we want, meaning that our communication isn’t broken.

OUGD505 Studio Brief 2 Progress Crit

When going into the crit I felt that I wasn't very prepared, I had been working on other modules and I had been struggling to come up with a succinct idea for this brief. However this crit I feel will help me to develop my idea and really get on with this project.

I had a basic idea a range of deliverables and research of the deliverables to show.

I also asked people to answer the three questions:

1. Should it be a conference or an event ?
2. Are all the suggested deliverables appropriate ? Is there anything I have missed or could think about ?
3. Should all the content be mid-intellectual, so that the conference/event so that it is more accessible to the general public such as the fans of Inception rather than intellectuals ?

The feedback I got was very constructive, the main points I took from the feedback are:

  • the idea should be an event, a conference sounds too clinical/boring
  • I should consider interactivity, maybe 3D and levels
  • Also in my research someone mentioned they really liked the yellow colour and thought I should consider this colour in my design
  • maybe the event could be part of a science museum event
  • I should focus on a niche market
  • the deliverables I suggested are appropriate
  • Dont over complicate

Pentagram

http://new.pentagram.com/2011/06/new-work-benetton/

I found this work from Pentegram when I was looking into Colors magazine, Fabrica and Benetton. I found these branding guidelines which I found really clear and precise, the brand guidelines are even branded so specifically and well.

As well as this I personally like the design, and the company branding. The green and white is very striking.

And so after I had seen this I started looking into Pentagram.

There was a lot more work to look into and I think I will look when I have some spare time, obviously pentagram is a well established and large graphic design company, and so there is a lot too look at as well as this they have a lot of prestigious/ well-known clients. There work ranges in its style as different designers work on different things, and so I will look at what appeals to be such as the work above.

Research Publication Crit 1

26/02/14

Research Publication Crit 1

For this crit we where had to have mockups and layouts etc. I had mockups of how my book would work and I had my pages of my book but in digital form. I didn't realise that we needed the actual publication printed, however, I couldn't of had this printed properly anyway as I need to print double-sided A2 which is quite expensive. But I could have printed the pages out singularly in colour so people would of been able to see them properly.

The style of crit helped me though as we where able to firstly explain our work and then as the second part of the crit go around the table individually and write feedback on their crit sheet.

I felt like this gave me a lot of feedback, and people where constructive and it was positive. I also felt that I gave feedback to others that I would want to receive.

Definite changes I need to make

  • The size of the type
  • The leading of the type
  • The red being produced on two different softwares makes the red slightly different
  • Image and type overlay sometimes makes the type unreadable

Catalogue

"We specialise in design for print, branding, identity, books, exhibition and web. We work for both commercial clients and on self initiated projects."

I like the specialisations of this studio, the work they produce is clearly influenced by grid layouts, which is something I like.

As this studio is in Leeds they are easily contactable and I could even go visit them, they do state that they don't take interns, but they have to me what seems like very good reasons in a manifesto they wrote, but I could still try ask to have a look around.
