  • the point size of the copy
  • Image resolution
  • The creation of an interactive part of the campaign
  • The overall name of the campaign
  • Removing the photographs of the  products
  • Layout of the images on the board

First Research Boards Critique

In this session we had to show our final research boards, we had to discuss the content and then we had to look into the actual design of the boards themselves and what design boards should and shouldn't include.

As a group we came up with a definitive list of what we thought…

shouldn't be on a final design board …
  • 1st person narrative
  •  very initial thoughts, changes in direction
  • spelling mistakes
  • printing imperfections
  • pixelated images
  • bad print resolutions
  • too much text T.L.D.R ( too long didn't read )
  • too little text, not enough explantation
boards should include/ have …
  • your own name
  • page/ board numbers
  • titles
  • your own and final work
  • good photographs
  • they should be consistent
  • have a good grid/ layout

In the first part of the session we looked at boards we had created previously for the last module, we assessed other peoples boards whilst they assessed our own. We had to do this upon the criteria above. I found this useful to not only learn from what other people had done good and bad, but to see the mistakes in my own work which I could not necessarily see.

Then we had to asses our most recent boards for our new module. These are research boards and not final work boards, but there are similar standards for both.
Two people looked at my five boards and I found there feedback helpful but encouraging too, I personally think that I am okay at producing design boards to a quite good standard but I know there is room for a bit of improvement too.

Board 1.
(which just before the session I had caught with cello tape ! )

Can't read the type on the board too well from the rip
And what is the purpose of the board

Self Reflection:
Keep boards in a safe place i.e in a folder, so they don't get ripped or spilt on etc
I think that these comments are valid, I think that for this page to be purposeful I would need to add more images/ text, however I like to introduce the boards with a page that literally stated what the boards are about and so I will try to incorporate their feedback with my own opinion too.

Board 2.
Comments:

Why is the two bottom paragraphs in bold and the introductory copy in regular ?
Good grid/ layout system
Two of the images are pixelated

Self Reflection:
I am happy to hear that my layout is good, and that I have used a good grid.
I will have to find higher resolution images next time and just check them as they look okay on screen.
And I forgot to change the regular font into bold ! So next time I should print off my boards first so that I can really spot these mistakes.

Board 3.
Comments:
Good consistency
consistent gutters in-between images
Too much text TLDR
no page number

Self Reflection:
For the text I didn't know what to put as my theme is very hard to visualise as nobody can really see dreams it was hard to source imagery, a lot of the information is written. However I could try to create my own imagery or make my points more brief.

Board 4.
Comments:
TLDR
one image slightly out of the grid (elephant)
no page numbers
should use capital letters

Self Reflection:
All fair constructive comments, which I can address like I have stated previously, except the capitalisation of letters, I had left them as lower case as a design aspect, I prefer lowercase a lot of the time, and I feel that all lowercase is more consistent. However I can see how this looks unprofessional and so I will change the letters accordingly.

Board 5.
Comments:
Lower print quality one some images
gutter spacing is off compared to the other boards
use of the first person
no page number

Self Reflection:
I really need to check over my grid/ layout and just check how I have set my images, (on InDesign)

And so from all of this I think that my boards aren't bad and they almost have a good consistent layout, there are a few images with image quality which I need to look out for next time and other tweaks that I could spot myself if I had of printed my boards out before presenting, and so I will print them off before I take them to be presented in future.
